As a child of the seventies I grew up secure in the knowledge that I would one day be driving around in a van with a talking dog for company, solving mysteries at creepy old mansions. It wasn’t too long before I realised this kind of thing just doesn’t go on in the North East of England and the closest I was ever going to get to this was if I became a cartoonist and created the stories myself. This led to the creation of my first comic book when I was eleven. Ten years later, I still loved illustration, but found myself studying Fashion Design at Manchester Metropolitan University. Unfortunately, as good as my illustrations may have been, actually contructing them for someone to wear proved to be a major ordeal. Upon Graduation I decided to concentrate on the illustration, and found employment as an in-house designer for a Greeting Cards company in Leeds. About a year ago I started doing a little freelance work, and as my workload started to grow I decided it was time to get out there and do my own thing. My inspiration comes, not from the real world, but from that primary coloured world of my childhood. A world were there isn’t a problem which can’t be solved by a giant robot, or a super intelligent chimp. The only difference between my work now and the work when I was eleven is that now I have a nice shiny apple mac to help me out, and a degree in Fashion to ensure that the super intelligent chimp is kitted out in the best Paris has to offer. |
