Natalie was born in the peaceful seaside town of Morecambe Bay in 1983.
All that sea air and potted shrimps (very nice ones at that) must have gone to her head because one day she decided to go into her mothers bedroom and borrow her favourite red lipstick...and proceeded to apply it her lips. Upon finishing she took a look around the room and thought it was in desperate need of a facelift. All that cream was so booooooring...so she used the red lipstick to "re-decorate" her parents bedroom. The makeover included a family portrait on the mirror, a pony on the wall, and Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs on the bed sheets. She was two at the time and has never heard the end of it...
Apparently I could draw before I could talk, which I find impossible to believe as I can't seem to shut up rambling on about some erelavent thing or another most of the time...
Graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in Design And Art Direction, I soon realised that I wanted to spend the rest of my days drawing random creations that somehow make their way into my brain. It makes me happy.
I usually feel inspired when I come across some or all of the following: (although cannot be guaranteed), Fantasy Film extravagansas, the whole of the 1980's, somebody talking utter sense, Art Nouveau, marvellous musicals, vintage clothes, Ameretto con hielo, Ancient Eygypt, the combination of black and gold, strobe lights, science-fiction, talking to animals as if they speak "human", The Rocky Horror Picture Show, electronicmusic, the masterpieces of Surrealism, Madonna.
Working in pencil and pen and ink to create mostly line art, I see my work as fairly dark in places, detailed, with a sort of elegant complexity to it. I like the ornate, decorative and free-form. It is mostly characterised by tongue and cheek references to surreal and dystopian themes and ideas.
I am currently still living in the Bay but I will soon elope to London for ever with my beloved pencil and pens to reek legal havoc in the nations capital....... |
